HISTORY:
The monumental entry doors to the Tokyo CMR were part of the original design and construction of the facility (completed 1926-31). Antonin Raymond, one of the architects was a student of Japanese culture and large periods of his practice were devoted to work there. The doors command attention, crafted by the Obayashi Corporation who constructed the residence. Made of weathered bronze, each panel frames a clear glass decorated with a metal flower motif. The doors continue to function but are in need of restoration. They do not close properly, the jambs and strikes of both are badly worn and deformed. The bronze itself is weather worn and deformed.
